Ground Coffee vs. Capsules: Which Is Better for a Portable Espresso Maker?
Ground coffee or capsules? The choice comes down to how much time you have and how you like to make your coffee.
Ground coffee gives you more choice over the beans you use. Capsules make brewing quicker and tidier. Espresso Rituals takes both, so there’s no reason to stick to just one.

What’s the difference in everyday use?
With ground coffee, you choose the coffee, measure it out, and fill the basket. It takes a little more preparation, and you’ll have loose grounds to clear away afterwards. In return, you can try different roasters and use beans you already love.
With capsules, the coffee is already measured for you. Load a compatible capsule using the capsule holder, assemble the maker, and brew. There’s less mess, though you’ll still need to remove the used capsule and clean the brewer.
Our Espresso Rituals portable espresso maker works with ground coffee and Nespresso-compatible NS capsules. Choose that capsule format when you stock up.
Which tastes better?
That depends on the coffee and what you enjoy drinking. Grounds give you more freedom to choose your beans and roast. If you grind your own beans, you can also grind them just before brewing.
Capsules are handy when you’ve found a coffee you like and want to make it without much fuss. Find a blend you enjoy, and you can keep the same familiar cup ready for busy mornings.
Freshness, storage, and preparation all matter. Keep your coffee fresh and take a little time over loading it. Grounds or capsules, the best choice is the one you enjoy drinking.
Capsules for busy mornings and travel
When you’re packing for a trip or making coffee between meetings, capsules keep things simple. You don’t have to measure coffee for each cup, and there’s less chance of spilling grounds in your bag.

Pack enough compatible capsules for the trip. Your favourite roaster might not make them, so choose a blend you like before you leave. Bring something to collect used capsules until you can dispose of them properly.
Wherever you stop for coffee, set the brewer on a stable surface. Don’t use it while walking or driving.
Ground coffee when you want more choice
If you enjoy trying a new bag of beans or have a favourite local roaster, ground coffee makes more sense. Choosing and preparing the coffee can be part of the pleasure, especially when you’re not rushing out the door.

Use the grind, dose, and loading method in your maker’s instructions. For travel, keep your coffee in an airtight container so it’s ready when you stop.

Which costs less per cup?
Use the prices of the coffee you actually buy to compare.
For grounds, divide the bag price by the number of shots you brew from it. A bag costing AED 40 that gives you 25 shots works out to AED 1.60 per shot.
For capsules, divide the pack price by the number of capsules. A pack of 10 costing AED 30 works out to AED 3 per capsule.
Those example costs show the method. Plug in your own bag or capsule prices, including delivery, to see what each cup costs you.
Cleanup and waste
Ground coffee leaves a basket to empty and clean. Capsules keep the grounds contained, but the brewer still needs cleaning. Let the device and used coffee components cool before handling them. Run a water-only cycle to clean Espresso Rituals.
With grounds, you’re left with spent coffee and the bag it came in. With capsules, you also have an individual container for each cup. Whether those capsules can be recycled depends on their material and the collection options where you live. Check before putting them in household recycling.
How to choose
Espresso Rituals gives you both options. Start with the way you want your coffee break to feel.
For a quick cup at work or a compact travel kit, we recommend compatible capsules. If you want to use your favourite beans and enjoy measuring them out, go with grounds.
Try both. You might prefer grounds at home and capsules when you’re away. Use the correct holder for each and follow the loading instructions.

Using both with Espresso Rituals
Espresso Rituals takes ground coffee and Nespresso-compatible NS capsules, so you can switch depending on your plans for the day. It heats cold or hot water to 90°C before brewing, extracts at 20 bar, and recharges over USB-C.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use any capsule?
Choose Nespresso-compatible NS capsules for Espresso Rituals. Capsule systems have different shapes and sizes, so look for that format when buying.
Is ground coffee stronger?
Not necessarily. A stronger flavour doesn’t always mean more caffeine, either. The coffee, dose, roast, and brewing method all affect what ends up in your cup.
Do capsules mean no cleanup?
They keep loose grounds contained and make cleanup tidier. Remove the used capsule after the components have cooled, then clean the maker.
Can I switch between grounds and capsules?
Yes. Espresso Rituals takes both. Use the ground-coffee holder or the Nespresso-compatible NS capsule holder for your choice.
Which is better for travel?
Capsules are easier to portion and pack. Grounds work well too if you’d rather bring your own coffee and enjoy measuring it. Choose whichever fits your trip.
You don’t have to choose just one
Use grounds when you want more choice over your coffee. Use capsules when you want less preparation and mess. One might suit your weekday mornings, the other your weekends.
